DNA/RNA Sizing

Sample integrity can be assessed via automated electrophoresis. The success of downstream processing is determined by size and integrity of the sample. The UMGC uses two different platforms to assess size and quality of RNA and DNA samples: 1) Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer and 2) Agilent 4200 TapeStation. Both instruments provide high-throughput, sensitive, and high-resolution results compared to the running of denaturing agarose gels.

Questions

For questions regarding our DNA and RNA sizing service, please contact our QC team at umgc-qc@umn.edu.

  Service Scale Unit UMN External

  DNA Sizing.
  Agilent TapeStation/Bioanalyzer. 1-any sample $8.20 $9.43

  RNA Sizing.
  Agilent TapeStation/Bioanalyzer. 1-any sample $7.13 $8.20

How to Order

Print and submit the completed submission form with your samples.

For Agilent DNA sizing, submit 4 ul of sample in a 96-well plate (fill plate starting with A1-H1, A2-H2, etc.).

Note: Capillary electrophoresis is sensitive to ionic contaminants. Hence, higher salt concentrations can interfere with performance of samples in molecular sizing. We recommend cleaning up samples for Agilent Qualitative Analysis. Please elute in water or 10mM Tris-HCL, pH 8.5 for best results.

Samples can be dropped off at one of our laboratory locations.

Please make sure samples are submitted directly to a UMGC staff member so that the samples are stored appropriately. DNA samples can be placed in the indicated freezer.

1-202 Nils Hasselmo Hall (Minneapolis campus) – Freezer #1.

1-210 Cancer & Cardiovascular Research Building (Minneapolis campus) small freezer in the lobby.

28 Snyder Hall (St. Paul campus) – please drop off directly with UMGC staff. We have a fridge, not a freezer in Snyder 20.

Deliverable

Electropherogram and gel pseudo images are emailed to client.

What is the turnaround time?

The UMGC guarantees a turnaround time of 3 days. Often results are sent out within 24 hours of sample submission.
