UMGC partners with MAISRC on a rapid response Zebra Mussel project
In response to nationwide alerts that the invasive zebra mussel has been found in pet store moss balls, the UMGC and the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) are working together to monitor Minnesota lakes by sequencing genetic markers found in the moss balls to compare with any future lake infestation. The UMGC will use Genotyping-by-sequencing, a method previously used by the UMGC in partnership with invasive species researcher Dr. Mike McCartney to genotype over 1,000 Zebra mussel samples pulled from Minnesota lakes and rivers.
