Working at the UMGC

The UMN Genomics Center (UMGC) has become a top academic sequencing facility by providing affordable, cutting-edge genomic solutions to researchers at the University of Minnesota and throughout the U.S. As a facility with a very wide breadth of services - from extraction to next-generation sequencing - we employ experienced scientists to provide in-depth project consultation to assist researchers in identifying the appropriate technology for their research goals, and to then carry out the work itself. Our 40+ employees across three laboratories are committed to delivering high-quality results within a fixed timeline by following established protocols or by developing new methods for researchers needing customized solutions.

The UMGC is a dynamic, team-driven workplace, where recent graduates and experienced Ph.D.s collaborate in a productive work environment. We offer a competitive salary with comprehensive U of M benefits that include medical and dental plan options, tuition benefits, and vacation and sick leave.

Student

Undergraduates with a major in a biology field are well-suited to work for the UMGC, but we encourage applications from students from other STEM disciplines, such as engineering, as we provide hands-on training. This is an attractive student job that can be a solid starting block for an entry-level researcher position after graduation; many of our students move on to graduate or professional school.

Job advantages include gaining experience in a broad set of skills: customer service, instrument maintenance, molecular techniques, and laboratory operations; working with a diverse team of scientists, operational staff, research scientists, and technicians; and flexible work hours that will work around class and extracurricular schedules.
