The Genomics Center has become a top academic sequencing facility by providing affordable, cutting-edge genomic solutions to researchers at the University of Minnesota and throughout the U.S. As a facility with a very wide breadth of services - from extraction to next-generation sequencing - we employ experienced scientists to provide in-depth project consultation to assist researchers in identifying the appropriate technology for their research goals, and to then carry out the work itself. Our 35+ employees across four laboratories are committed to delivering high quality results within a fixed timeline by following established protocols or by developing new methods for researchers needing customized solutions.

Our facility employs researchers from a variety of backgrounds and job experience, but we commonly have opportunities for entry-level processors:
Researcher 1: The purpose of this position is to process genomic services at the UMGC for internal and external researchers. The workload consists of following standard operating procedures, generating and delivering data for service manager review. In addition, this position also requires the running, maintaining, and troubleshooting of specialized scientific instrumentation necessary to accomplish the tasks associated with services.
Researcher 2: The purpose of this position is to independently manage and process multiple simultaneous genomic service projects and report final data to internal and external researchers. The workload consists of meeting with researchers to help them understand genomic methods and design their experiments, as well as following precise standard operating procedures, documenting all aspects of workflows, generating and delivering data, including consulting with clients after data delivery. In addition, this position also involves the running, maintaining, and troubleshooting of specialized scientific instrumentation necessary to accomplish the tasks associated with projects.

Undergraduates with a major in a biology field are well-suited to work for the UMGC, but we encourage applications from students from other STEM disciplines, such as engineering, as we provide hands-on training. This is an attractive student job that can be a solid starting block for an entry-level researcher position after graduation; many of our students move on to graduate or professional school.
