Acknowledgments

The UMGC provides access to complex genomic technologies and offers guidance in experimental design. One measure of our impact on the UMN research community is the number of publications we support. Thus, we request that any data generated using UMGC resources, which are presented in a publication, grant proposal, poster, or presentation, be formally acknowledged. Payment for UMGC services does not preclude the recognition of resources used or intellectual contribution to a project.

See examples of how researchers have recognized the UMGC in their publications and a list of publications that UMGC scientists have co-authored.

Types of Recognition

The best format for acknowledging the UMGC depends on the nature of the project and the contribution of UMGC staff and can be one of the following: 1) acknowledgment of the facility, 2) acknowledgment of the staff, or 3) co-authorship.

Facility Acknowledgment

For research projects using routine UMGC workflows, consultation, and data processing (i.e. not involving data interpretation), we request recognition in your publication or presentation.

Publications may recognize the UMGC in the Acknowledgments section and/or the Materials and Methods section, varying on the journal's requirements and author’s preference, but we should be acknowledged in at least one of those sections.

Below are some examples of how to recognize the UMGC. Authors may modify these as they see fit, but our core should be identified as “University of Minnesota Genomics Center”.

Acknowledgment Section Examples:

General

  • This work was supported by the resources and staff at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (https://genomics.umn.edu).
  • The authors acknowledge the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) for providing resources that contributed to the research results reported in this paper.
  • We acknowledge the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for its technical assistance.
  • This work was completed in part with resources provided by the University of Minnesota Genomics Center.

Service Specific

  • We thank the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for providing [insert service/s] and technical support.
  • The authors would like to thank the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for performing [insert service/s].
  • Sequencing was performed at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center Facility (Minneapolis, MN).
  • [Insert technique/method] was carried out at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center using [insert technology] according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Material and Methods Section Examples:

Note: If you need specific details on lab protocols and methods, sequencing parameters, or analysis pipelines used for your project in order to write the Materials and Methods section, researchers should contact a service manager for this information.

  • [insert service/s] was performed at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center.
  • Samples were submitted to the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for [insert service/s].
  • Samples were shipped to the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (Minneapolis, MN) for [insert type] library preparation and Illumina sequencing.
  • The University of Minnesota Genomics Center performed [insert service/s] using [insert technology] according to the manufacturer’s specified protocol.

Staff Acknowledgment

If UMGC staff provided help that went beyond routine workflows, consultation, or data processing, by providing advanced training, custom sample preparation, or comprehensive guidance in experimental design, please recognize the UMGC scientist(s) by name in the acknowledgments, as well as the UMGC itself.

  • The authors acknowledge the technical skills and assistance of [insert name/s] and the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for their contribution to this publication.
  • The technical assistance of [insert name/s] and resources at the University of Minnesota Genomics Center are greatly appreciated.
  • We thank [insert name/s] from the University of Minnesota Genomics Center for technical assistance with [insert service/s or contribution].
  • We acknowledge the UMN Genomics Center and [insert name/s] for[insert service/s or contribution].

Staff Co-authorship

If UMGC scientists interpreted data, participated substantially in the design of your project, made significant intellectual contributions, wrote a portion of your manuscript, developed bioinformatic tools and pipelines, or implemented novel lab work, please include our contributing scientists as co-authors on publications, posters, reports, and presentations. The UMGC should also be recognized in the Acknowledgments section.

  • The final decision on co-authorship is determined by the PI on the publication.
  • For more information, please see the Authorship Guidelines established by the ABRF.
  • A list of publications that UMGC scientists have co-authored can be found here

RRID Number

Many journals request authors to list a unique Research Resource Identifier (RRID) for all or specific research components in their papers, including CellPress and Nature Protocols. The SciCrunch portal is a central location for finding RRIDs for reagents, tools, materials, and core facilities.

The UMGC Core Facility RRID # is SCR_012413. Example sentence: This work was completed in part with resources provided by the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (RRID: SCR_012413).
