Future direction of sequencing at the UMGC

Over the past year, a flock of advanced next-generation sequencing instruments has emerged on the market. These instruments come from well-established companies such as Illumina and PacBio, as well as upstarts like Element Biosciences, Singular Genomics, and Ultima Genomics. The UMGC has been diligently assessing these instruments with an eye to the broad range of needs of U of M scientists, with a particular focus on sequencers capable of supporting single-cell and spatial genomics.

As part of our efforts, we are now starting to acquire these instruments, beginning with the Element AVITI. Additionally, we are establishing "access" to other sequencing technologies, including the Illumina NextSeq X Plus, through outsourcing arrangements.

To share our progress and plans, we are organizing a Zoom information session where Dr. Beckman will present the current thinking for the UMGC’s future sequencing suite. We encourage active participation from attendees and welcome questions and feedback during the session.
