Training in RNA-Seq and DNA-Seq Library Prep Methods Now Available
As sequencing costs continue to decline, library preparation is becoming the rate-limiting and most expensive step for many research projects. To help investigators maximize budgets and increase throughput, the UMGC CoLab now offers hands-on instruction in RNA-Seq and DNA-Seq library construction.
Through the CoLab’s Bring Your Own Protocol (BYOP) initiative, researchers can bring any commercially validated and reviewed library preparation protocol (e.g., Watchmaker RNA-Seq) to the CoLab for training. Effectively, all UMGC service protocols now have a self-service option.
BYOP Training Benefits
- Individualized training in UMGC-validated protocols or commercially available methods.
- Access to library prep instrumentation in the CoLab (including QC, and coming soon, Covaris and Agilent Tapestation).
- Split Kits to reduce reagent lab waste—we will sell pre-aliquoted reagents (including indices) for commonly used kits, so you don’t need to purchase a complete kit.
For many labs, a break-even point arrives sooner than expected; even a modest number of libraries may justify transitioning to self-service. Training a researcher on a library prep protocol that is frequently purchased as full-service can substantially reduce UMGC labor fees while retaining our expertise and infrastructure.
