Model Organism Sequencing Service

Overview
Female common fruit fly, Drosophila Melanogaster

The UMGC’s new Model Organism Sequencing Service (MOSS) offers cost-effective, high-throughput whole-genome sequencing for the workhorse model organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans, with other model organisms to be added in the coming months.

MOSS includes comprehensive support, from library preparation and sequencing to downstream bioinformatics analysis. Researchers receive a report with alignment files (BAMs) and variant call files (VCFs), as well as the identification and mapping of commonly used insertion elements, enabling seamless data interpretation.

Sequencing is performed at 30x coverage on the new Ultima UG 100 sequencer, providing a robust depth for genome analysis. Higher coverage options are available upon request.

The UMGC welcomes requests for other model organisms—contact us for details and a quote. For researchers who do not require analysis, we offer low-cost whole-genome sequencing on the UG 100 for any organism. View UG 100 pricing here.

Applications

By driving down the cost of sequencing, the UMGC aims to enable researchers to use MOSS as a standard, efficient means to accomplish a variety of analyses:

  • Mutation and insertion mapping – Identify unknown genetic variants by comparing against reference strains.
  • CRISPR edit confirmation – Validate genome edits with high precision.
  • Structural variant detection – Characterize genomic changes such as deletions, duplications, and translocations.
  • Genotyping and strain authentication – Ensure the accuracy of genetic backgrounds in research models.
